Perspective, Ideology and Social Reality in the Aesthetic Theory of Georg Lukacs

(Conference Paper, PHAVISMINDA Conference, Silliman University, 2007)

What is the function of a writer[1]? Consequently, it can also be asked, what is the function of art? To the first question, the response shall be direct – the function of a writer is to reveal reality. It is the writer’s task to inform human consciousness of the reality of the world and to put forward a perspective of the human condition. The second question needs an indirect route, for we need to ask what is presupposed when any aesthetic formulation is conceived. To this, we say, that art must reveal the truth. Truth must be in art; art must be in truth.

Graduate Courses Taught

1. Philosophy of Language - the course will examine Gottlob Frege's "Sense and reference", Bertrand Russell's "On denoting", P.F. Strawson's "On referring", Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, and the contributions of A.J. Ayer, Rudolph Carnap, and W.V. Quine to analytic philosophy
2. Aesthetics - the course will be a critical study of Martin Heidegger's "The origin of the work of art", Nietzsche's "The birth of tragedy", and the aesthetic theories of Kant, Schopenhauer, Georg Lukacs and Walter Benjamin.
3. Political Philosophy - the course will study the works of John Rawls, Robert Nozick, Hannah Arendt, and Richard Rorty. Students will examine the concept of democracy, human rights, power, justice, minority rights, and equality.
4. Advanced Epistemology - the course will study Michel Foucault (knowledge and power), Jacques Derrida (deconstruction), Chomsky (linguistics), and Habermas (critical theory).
5. Advanced Logic - the course will examine seminal influences to modern logic and contemporary theories of meaning (natural and non-natural, systems of number, extension and intention), and in particular, Rudolp Carnap, G.E. Moore, HP Grice and Hilary Putnam.
6. Advanced Ethics - the course will examine moral issues on poverty and human development, social justice, human rights and democracy. The philosophers to be studied include Amartya Sen, Peter Singer, John Rawls, Iris Marion Young, and Thomas Pogge, among others.
7. Government Ethics and Public Accountability (MPA Program) - The course will examine the meaning of public interest, social justice and its relation to political and administrative ethics, transparency and the importance of moral integrity to public service.
8. Phenomenology - the course will study the works or primary texts of Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, Maurice-Merleau Ponty, Paul Ricoeur and Jean Paul Sartre and examine how these thinkers have shaped contemporary philosophy as it is today.
9. Philosophy of Science - the course is a historical survey of classic readings in the philosophy of science. This includes the works of Carl Hempel, Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Hilary Putnam, among others.
10. Environmental Ethics - the course will examine the issue of climate change and consider the approaches to the same on the basis of social justice and burden sharing, life-boat ethics, deep ecology, ecofeminism, radical environmentalism, among others.
